As many of you have seen lately in stories on TV and in the News & Observer, we experienced a large fire at the Raleigh Downtowner office (and our home) in historic Oakwood and unfortunately, we lost almost everything: our computers, cameras, our files, office equipment, along with our personal belongings. It's been most difficult for my son, whose 11th birthday was the same week. His room suffered some of the worst fire damage and there was very little left of his clothes, toys and belongings. The outpouring of support and kind words from our friends, neighbors and readers has made a world of difference and we can't thank everyone enough. We've gotten a lot of emails and phone calls from folks asking how they can help. We'd prefer that everyone visit the following website and volunteer or donate to any of the local area agencies that help with area homelessness, www.wakegov.com/humanservices/housing/homeless. We can only imagine what life must be like for people who are truly homeless, especially without the safety net of the wonderfully kind friends and neighbors that we're fortunate enough to have.
